Direct-fit idler arm for 1982–1992 Chevrolet and Pontiac trucks and SUVs. This replacement idler arm supports the steering linkage, maintains proper alignment, and reduces play for safer, more precise steering. Built for durability and long service life, it is designed as a straightforward restoration or maintenance item to return worn steering systems to factory-like performance. Easy to install with common tools, it’s an ideal choice for restoring steering feel and improving vehicle handling.
Features:
  • Fits 1982–1992 Chevrolet and Pontiac trucks/SUVs (select models; verify OE part number and fitment before purchase).
  • Replaces worn idler arm to eliminate steering play and improve alignment stability.
  • Heavy-duty construction for long-lasting durability under road and load conditions.
  • Factory-style taper and bushing design for reliable steering geometry and consistent performance.
  • Straightforward installation — designed as a direct replacement for restoration and maintenance projects.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 3/5
  • Estimated time: 45-90 minutes
Suggested Tools:
  • jack and jack stands or vehicle lift
  • wheel chocks
  • socket set and ratchet
  • wrenches (including a torque wrench)
  • ball joint separator or pickle fork
  • hammer
  • penetating lubricant (e.g., PB Blaster)
  • safety glasses and gloves
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on level ground, chock rear wheels, and loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
  2. Raise front of vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove front wheel(s) as needed for access.
  3. Locate the idler arm on the passenger side of the frame steering linkage. Apply penetrating lubricant to mounting nuts and the ball stud if corroded.
  4. Support the steering linkage or pitman arm to prevent movement. Use a ball joint separator to separate the idler arm ball stud from the center link.
  5. Remove the idler arm mounting bolts/nuts from the frame crossmember. Keep any washers or hardware if reusing, or replace with new hardware if supplied.
  6. Remove the old idler arm and compare to the new part to confirm correct orientation and fit.
  7. Install the new idler arm in the original position. Hand-start mounting bolts/nuts, then torque to manufacturer's specification using a torque wrench.
  8. Reconnect the ball stud to the center link and secure with the castle nut and cotter pin (or specified fastener). Torque to spec.
  9. Reinstall wheel(s), lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to specification.
  10. With vehicle on level surface, check steering alignment and toe. Perform a professional alignment if necessary to ensure optimal handling and tire wear.
