Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 2-4 hours (varies with rust extent and installer experience)
Instructions:
- Remove trunk trim, carpet, spare tire, and any items that obstruct access to the damaged area.
- Inspect and mark the rusted or damaged section to be removed; preserve as much original metal as feasible for reference.
- Cut out the affected area using an angle grinder and clean surrounding metal back to sound steel.
- Test-fit the replacement panel, trimming any interference points so the panel seats flush against mating surfaces.
- Prepare attachment points by drilling out spot welds or cleaning the mating surfaces for plug/stitch welding.
- Clamp the panel in place, ensure proper alignment and gaps, then tack weld at strategic points to hold fitment.
- Complete welding with short stitch or plug welds to minimize distortion; allow metal to cool between passes.
- Grind welds smooth as needed and check fit; use hammer/dolly to correct any minor fitment issues.
- Apply seam sealer to all joints to prevent moisture intrusion, then prime the repaired area with epoxy or etching primer.
- Finish with paint and undercoating as required, reinstall trunk accessories and trim after cure.
