Inner right-hand tie rod end for 1975–1981 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac vehicles. Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, engage parking brake, and chock rear wheels.
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle with a jack, and secure on jack stands. Remove the front wheel.
- Locate the inner right-hand tie rod end on the steering rack or center link and apply penetrating oil to nuts and threads if corroded.
- Mark the position of the outer tie rod on the threaded portion (or measure the length) to preserve alignment, then loosen the jam nut and count the number of turns as you remove the old part to help match alignment.
- Disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using a tie rod end puller or pickle fork, then unscrew the inner tie rod end from the rack or center link. Some vehicles may require removal of a retaining clip or pinch bolt.
- Compare the new part to the old one to confirm correct fit. Apply anti-seize to threads if desired.
- Install the new inner tie rod end by threading it to the same position/number of turns as the original, tighten to the manufacturer’s specified torque, and reinstall any retaining hardware.
- Reattach the outer tie rod and tighten the jam nut to secure the adjustment. Torque all fasteners to specification.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to spec.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure correct toe and overall steering geometry after installation.
