Outer tie rod end (right or left hand) designed for 1982–1992 Chevrolet and Pontiac vehicles. This essential steering component connects the steering rack or center link to the steering knuckle, translating driver input into wheel motion while maintaining alignment and steering precision. Built for durability and reliable performance, it restores steering responsiveness, reduces play and vibration, and helps prevent uneven tire wear. Ideal for restoration and maintenance projects, this direct-replacement tie rod end provides dependable fit and function for older GM models.
Features:
- Fits 1982–1992 Chevrolet and Pontiac models (outer tie rod end, right or left hand).
- Durable steel construction with corrosion-resistant finish for long service life.
- Precisely machined ball stud and tapered taper-socket for secure steering linkage connection.
- Reduces steering play and vibration, improving handling and tire wear.
- Easy direct-replacement for restoration or routine steering system maintenance.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, and loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and secure on jack stands. Remove the front wheel to access the tie rod end.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle. Use a marker to mark the position of the old tie rod end on the threaded portion to preserve alignment as closely as possible.
- Loosen the jam nut securing the tie rod end to the inner tie rod or tie rod assembly.
- Remove the cotter pin (if equipped) and loosen the castle nut or securing nut on the tie rod end stud.
- Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end stud from the steering knuckle. Avoid excessive hammering to protect components.
- Unscrew the tie rod end from the tie rod assembly the number of turns indicated by your alignment mark. Count turns to match the approximate original length.
- Thread the new tie rod end onto the tie rod assembly to the same number of turns as removed, aligning the mark made earlier for an approximate starting alignment.
- Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the castle nut or securing nut to the specified torque, and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the jam nut against the tie rod end to lock it in place.
- Grease the tie rod end if the unit has a grease fitting; wipe away excess grease.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to specification.
- Because exact steering alignment may have shifted, have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure proper toe and tire wear.
