Direct-replacement center link engineered for 1970–1981 Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac steering systems. This center link restores proper steering geometry by connecting the pitman arm and idler arm to the inner tie rods, delivering precise alignment and responsive handling. Built to withstand road stresses, it helps eliminate play and wandering caused by worn or corroded factory components. Ideal for restoration projects or routine maintenance, the part offers durable construction and straightforward installation to get vintage steering back to safe, reliable operation.
Features:
- Fits 1970–1981 Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models that use the OEM-style center link steering layout.
- Heavy-duty steel construction resists bending and corrosion for long service life.
- Restores correct steering geometry to reduce play, wandering, and uneven tire wear.
- Pre-machined mounting surfaces and bushings for accurate fit and smooth operation.
- Direct-replacement design simplifies restoration and maintenance of classic steering systems.
- Works with existing pitman arm, idler arm, and inner tie rods for a complete steering linkage repair.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 1–2 hours
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake, and lift the front of the vehicle with a floor jack; support securely on jack stands.
- Remove the front wheels to access the steering linkage.
- Apply penetrating oil to the pitman arm and idler arm fasteners; loosen but do not fully remove mounting nuts.
- Use a pitman arm puller or appropriate separator to detach the pitman arm and idler arm from the center link; remove any cotter pins and retainers.
- Support the center link and remove the remaining fasteners connecting it to the idler arm, pitman arm, and inner tie rods.
- Compare the new center link to the old unit to ensure correct length and mounting orientation.
- Install the new center link in reverse order: position it on the pitman arm and idler arm, then install and hand-tighten mounting nuts.
- Reconnect inner tie rods or adjusters as required, ensuring proper engagement and alignment of ball studs or bushings.
- Torque all fasteners to factory specifications and install new cotter pins where applicable.
- Lower the vehicle, reinstall the wheels, and perform a preliminary steering check. Have a professional wheel alignment performed to finalize steering geometry.
